New Year Update

You know that feeling when you've spent far too much time in a cave like room with four other guys, and you open the door for the first time, and the sunlight has its death grip on your ocular nerve? That's how we feel right now. Needless to say, we are very excited about the work we've done and can't wait to share it with you. In the spirit of the new year we have decided to remove our music from those greedy pay sites and give it to you, our dearly devoted fans, for FREE!!! We don't know how long this will last so follow the link below and get the entire Shallow on the Draft EP for free!

Let me just start off by saying how much we appreciate the love and support you guys have given to us throughout our time as a band. Especially over the past three weeks. If you haven't heard yet we did not move on to the next round of the Rolling Stone contest. However, be not discouraged on our behalf! We are happy to have been a part of it at all. It was amazing to see all our friends, fans, and families rally together in support of what we do.

the record, the writing, and the wedding

It's been awhile since I posted anything and this is mainly because I suck. We just got our first rough mix of the our forth coming album "Shallow on the Draft" and we couldn't be happier with where things are headed. Even if you are very familiar with our work you will be pleasantly (I hope) surprised at some of the songs on here. Including two new songs we have not previously played live called "Big Yellow Sky" and "Compass". It is our hope to have this thing ready to go mid October barring any unforeseen calamity...fingers are crossed. For the time being we are working on our live performances and writing new music which for me is the best part of slowing down the show schedule. It's been nice to take a look inward again and see what has become of me since I last visited. It's a bit of pig sty but I promise to bring some of the more rotten bits to the surface so we can all examine this mess together. It's funny, as of recent it seems like there is a good mix of hope along with a "calling out" of certain things in myself and others. This is one of the hardest parts of music writing actually, sharing the more vulnerable bits of my life as well as others. I made a decision when I began to write regularly that if I had something to say it would be about what is going on with me. In doing so I managed to discover things about me I never thought were there as well as keep myself in check with regards to my own faults. Not that I don't manage to continually make the same mistakes but at least I recognize them more readily.

Of course the down side to all of this is you pretty much get to see me at my most vulnerable moments. So I hope you enjoy that, or at least get uncomfortable with me. On our first EP many of the songs had to do with a failed marriage and how I came to terms with that, this record is much more on the hopeful side. I felt like over this past year the overall theme for myself and the band is we have nothing to lose so lets make this work. This record is about how we are a family in a sea of rolling tides that can manage the shallow shores. There is much to get from this album if you care to look and I hope you do.

We recently played at our good friends Ian and Ashlyn's Wedding. Ian Fowles has been in some really great bands but is currently playing with The Auquabats and we were happy to be a part of their special day. Ian has also been the one responsible for those super rad buttons we give out. When we were in High School if you would have told me I would have been playing at his wedding my brain would have exploded. Here is some pictures from the wedding....

Sometimes we get asked the question "Hey Steelwells...what is your problem? Why are you always playing shows and being so incredibly industrious about your music?" The answer: we love what we do. This "Business" we are in of making music isn't exactly the smartest economical choice (especially nowadays). So in times like these you have to know why you do what you do. The reality is for people like us and many others, this is an obsession, a need and at times a sick disease of sorts. It soaks up all of our time and strains relationships, friendships, wallets, and sleep. You have to also keep in mind everyones differing views on the music, writing styles, and artistic vision. And most importantly, what does each individual want to achieve by being in a band. Do they just want a place where they can look cool on stage for a few minutes to impress some people, or do you have something you want to say, to give something and expose yourself in a way that is just short of being naked...speaking of which I think we could make some good money if we can convince Robbie to do a strip tease at our shows.

These are all questions that we have had to address individually and as a band. So it's agreed, we are all on the same page. We do this because without it we are lost. We have to do this, and if we have to do this we might as well do what we can to make it feasible on some level. Ever since I was young and went to my first show where I saw the Vandals play and nearly got my foot eaten off by a 400 lb. sasquatch who's face I stepped on while attempting to crowd surf it was the rule that you don't "sell out". I am realizing that maybe I didn't really know what that meant. I had all these rules for bands like- you can get play on an indie radio station but if you get played on KROQ you lose. If you sign to a major label you lose. If you like Creed you lose (well that one still holds up). I am finding that being a "sell out" does not have anything to do with whether or not you manage to make money as an artist, it's more about HOW your making your money as an artist. Does your major label take all control from you so you can fit a mold or trend that is hot right now? Or does your own band care more about the outfit they are wearing for the show than the music they are playing?

In my last post I spoke about honesty in the music, that same concept translates over to the business side as well. It seems to me that as we keep pushing forward with our plans to take over the world there is a lot of appreciation out there for bands who show up on time, do what they say they will do, and represent themselves as who they really are and not who they think they should be. I know that I appreciate the honesty from bands I am into. People who aren't afraid to be themselves and let go of pretense is always a breath of fresh air. Especially in an industry where there is a certain level of built in plastic thanks to the likes of American Idol and the machine that has brought us Brittany and Co.

Our goal as a band is to tell you our story and make enough money to keep telling you our story for as long as possible. And if the money never comes, we will keep doing it because we are insane and obsessed with music. So if you haven't been to a show or heard our music- do it. If you like it keep buying stuff from us so we can pay you back in kind. Either way we will continue to put our finger in your face and say "I am not touching you. I am not touching you. I am not touching you."...until we do, and you cry yourself to sleep in frustration.

Well it seems enough time has passed and it is time to finally post something up here. For anyone who has been pining for anything regarding The Steelwells I hope this will sustain you for at least a week. It has been a busier month than usual for us with our recording schedule as well as shows, more shows, and a little tiny bit of writing. The recording is going swimmingly over at artisans studio and we are getting close to being done tracking. Both Berrett and Kyle have really been instrumental in this entire recording process in helping us bring out the essence of what makes The Steelwells sound.

Rest assured we continue to reach into the well from which we continuously draw. We hope to bring some new music to everyone soon with music and lyrics that will hopefully mean as much to you as it does to us. I was having a conversation with a friend of mine who recently found out about our music. He asked me if we were a band that wrote the music then the lyrics or was it the other way around or simultaneously etc.. As far as the order of a song it varies, some songs are written out of jam sessions we might have as a band or just out of an acoustic writing session. However one constant remains in our music and that is honesty. It sounds like an easy task but when you take a hard look at yourself and a situation in your life being open about it can be the last thing on your list of things to do. Honesty is not only a theme within the lyrics but also an integral part of the music itself. We are not trying to sound like anything except what comes out of the well within us. We are constantly challenging each other on this musical and lyrical honesty. If I come to the band with lyrics the others feel are in any way contrived or trying too hard I will hear from them as we are all working for the same thing in the music.

Late Night Skin Pounding

So here we are at Artisans Studio in Fullerton tracking drums with B-rye. It is proving to be a late night so I thought I would say just a word or two with regard to the absolute awesomeness of our drummer. Currently "The Brain" is nailing one of our new songs and it sounds great. Sometimes he blows my mind how he memorizes so many beats, changes, and tempos. I love how he takes his role in the band so seriously, it just makes all of us work harder to keep up with him. Now if we could just get him to do a 10 minute drum solo at a show...

April has been a very busy month for The Steelwells. Lots of shows were played and many friends were made. We are getting ready to head into the studio in May to record with our good friend Barrett at Artisans Label in Fullerton. Earlier this year we had the pleasure of recording our song Boxes over there and we can't wait to head back. Looking forward in May we are going to be working on new material and solidifying our current line up of tunes so we can be sure to give you our very best on this album. Our hope is to have something completed by mid June. We also have some great shows lined up this month so head over to our myspace and check them out. The Steelwells Top 25 Albums

I think the most common and difficult question we get as a band is 'what do you sound like?'. Most of the time we really don't know what to answer so we say the first genre or band that comes to mind. For people who create things being compared to something can get frustrating. We have come up with a list of each band members top five most influential albums and why they are important to them. Hopefully this will help shed some light on where we are coming from musically and how each contributes to the overall sound we create.

Andrew Eapen- guitarist and backing vocals

John Mayer- Continuum

at one point i had given up on music and decided that i was going to pursue other endeavors, then john mayer came out with continuum and foiled all my plans. his album inspired me to write one more song for my collection. after writing the song, i wanted to find the best musicians i could to play it. which lead me to the people i play with now in the steelwells. as you can assume, i decided to keep playing music after this song was finish.

Department of Eagles- in ear park

dept of eagles along with grizzly bear are just awesome bands and "in ear park" is such an interesting CD. its among my favorites right now

Rilo Kiley- The execution of all things, and more adventurous (2 albums)

the fact that i have a huge crush on jenny lewis has nothing to do with why these albums are so great. check them out for yourself and you will understand.

Brazilian Girls- self titled

I cant help but listen to this album at least 10 times a week.

M. Ward- Post War

this is a new album to me but i can see myself listening to it for many years. i love the music and i think he has a really unique voice.

Brian Manchester- Drums/ Personality

Coldplay X&Y

The passion/emotion that comes through that album still amazes me. And the smarts of Coldplay at times can't be matched.

Wilco- Sky Blue Sky

Only they can create and pull off so many intricacies. Plus, every song on that album is listenable and amazing.

The Shins- Wincing the night away

The reasons are multiple, but I'll name a few: Simplistic drumming that works. They show that it's okay to be repetitive. Also, there's a lot of brilliant song making and melodies.

Iron and Wine- The Shepherds Dog

This album taught me how to "sit in" music for long stretches. The ability to capture a listener is a testament to the art the band creates.

Fleet Foxes - Self titled

I had to pick the most recent album (at least that I have received, but I do think it is the most recent on this list) that has captured my attention. The Fleet Foxes are revolutionaries of sorts. No, better said, they are original. Their harmonies and melodies along with their raw/organic musical complement is one of the most beautiful things I have heard in a long time. Their songs pack emotion, beauty, drive, power, subtleties, lower dynamics, musical intricacies, and an ability to play with conventional song structure (some bands that do this are just annoying, but not them). So, much thanks to them; hope there's more greatness coming out.

Robbie Gullage- Bass

Descendents- Everything sucks

Saves the Day- Stay what you are

Jamiraquai- High times: singles

John Mayer Trio- Try (live)

Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5- The Motown Years

From a bass players standpoint I chose these 5 because they have all inspired me to be a better bassist and, since that's what I do I figured it makes the most sense to list the bands that have made me push myself on my own instrument. On the other hand, when I think of music as a whole my choices probably would of been a lot different. The Descendents and Saves the Day are two albums that have stuck with me for a long time. Jamiroquai because I love to sit down, pick apart and learn the (funky)bass lines. John Mayer Trio mainly because of one person only, Pino Palladino the bass genius. Lastly, The Jackson Five because James Jamerson was one of the best best players to ever live.

Billy Kim- Keyboards/ guitar/ mandolin/ melodica/ xylophone/ vocals/ whatever else we can think to throw at him

The Beatles- Love

So I kind of cheated and used this album, but it compiles most of the band's greatest songs, while showing it's engineering and production talent.

Radiohead- In Rainbows

I've decided to go with the albums that have had the most influence on me musically through my life. While they may not be in regular rotation at the moment I will always see these albums as pushing me to make music...

The Vandals- Live Fast Diarrhea

I was 15 and memorized every word on the cassette tape I had. At that time it was like Dave Quackenbush and I were just on the same page. I love the irreverent sense of irony and the 'lets not take this life so seriously' attitude. Lumped into all of this is of course all the great punk rock of the late 70's, 80's and 90's...

Refused- The shape of punk to come

For me this album is the peak of Punk and Hardcore music. It came at perfect time but left a big gaping hole in Punk rock. The lyrics as well as the music seemed like they were made by some alien Rock and Roll race that came to earth to destroy all things punk rock. After this album every time I listen to a Punk/Hardcore band I find myself comparing them to this and being let down.

Elvis Costello- My Aim is True

This and all of Elvis' music has had a major influence on me musically. This album is from start to finish an open and honest discussion with the listener. His lyrics are full of confessions, irony, and passion. I still play this record and love every song on it.

Jeff Buckley- Grace

Jeff was a master musician, lyricist, and vocalist. I love all of the music he made while he was alive, but this album will always hold a special place. When I first heard it I was not that into it. As I kept listening I realized just how important his music was. I would say to anyone who is trying to improve their vocals learn this and "Live at Sine" note for note and you will get where you want to go. Just don't pop a blood vessel...

The Shins- Chutes Too Narrow

It was either this or Dave Bazan's "Fewer Moving Parts" for my more contemporary pick. However this won in the end because it has more songs therefore James Mercer had to work harder and he wins. This album is from end to end really amazing. The melodies and lyrics are a study in and of themselves. The song structures are just right as well as the mix. I listened to this album when I first started to write music for the steelwells and have used it as a reference point when I need to think outside of my box. I would recommend getting it...now....

I believe I speak for us all when I say I wish this list could be much much longer. I also know we all have similar favorites so much of what is on here is shared interest. But it's the differences on this list that makes our sound what it is. Hopefully for those interested parties who care to know what motivates our music this list will provide a reference point and a chance to hear something they normally would have ignored.

This month has been an eventful one for the steelwells. For those who don't know Robbie got punched in each of his eyes and is healing nicely...I'm sure he will watch what he says about Billy's hats from now on.

Flight of the Roscoes Chicken and Waffle

Last night we went to LA with the express purpose of getting our fill of laughs at a screening for the new season of Flight of the Conchords. We were however let down when we got there to find that we were not small enough to fit in the doors. If only we were just three quarters smaller I'm sure it would have worked to our advantage. Feeling a bit down trodden and large, we decided to make our way to Hollywood for some Chicken and Waffles. I think its safe to say we salvaged the evening as we poured syrup down our hairy chests and drank from the fountain of butter (which is said to bring happiness to one's life...albeit shortly lived.)

Of course Robbie managed to keep us all entertained by stepping in poop. I think we can all agree poop is funny.

Essentially it's a tight rope kit, where you can set a line between two posts(or in our case, trees) and walk the slackline.
